VESSELS 1979 — 1985

I designed the Flask Set in 1979 after seeing a flask from the Liao Dynasty in The Chinese Exhibition catalogue. I cast the body from an eggplant and the handles and spout from bamboo. “A design comes alive for me when it looks like something else. The flask resembles a bird to me and the cups are meant to resemble pipes.” I made this set until 1984.

I used squash and melons as the base for my vessels because they were large and had interesting texture and contours. I created new series each year and experimented with form and function. I made vessels throughout my studio years and not all series are included on this site.

In 1986 I began working with geometric shapes. The Silhouette Cups and Jars are the only geometric series I designed. I made them until I closed my studio in 1988.
